« Logos – Importance of a High Quality Logo
Logos – Changing Logos »

Logos – Text or No Text?

Another thing that one has to think about when designing a logo is if you want to incorporate text into your logo or not.  There are a few major companies that are moving away from the text and sticking just with images, yet there are others that if they took the text out of the logo they would not even have a logo left!  You have to decide what it right for your company.

Some examples of some companies that do not use text in their logo are:

Starbucks New Logo  Nike Logo Lululemon Logo

The interesting thing with all of these companies is that at one point they all had text in their logos:

Old Starbucks Logo  Old Nike Logo Old Lululemon Logo

Often the biggest reason for dropping the text from the logo is that you feel your brand is recognizable enough on it’s own that you no longer need to have the text with the logo.  As a designer I can say sometimes making a design is much easier when you have total control of where the text goes and not being limited to where it is by the logo.

Another reason to remove the text is that it can limit your business at times.  Take Starbucks for example.  The text that they removed was “Starbucks Coffee”, by doing this they can now venture away from only coffee related items; they’re not restricted by the text in their logo.  So for example, say your company offers one product and you put it in your logo text, such as ABC Door Stop Manufacturers.  Well, what if you end up making another product that’s completely unrelated?  You now have to re-design your logo, maybe even adjust your company name – a whole lot of work that could have been avoided.  Something to remember when you design your logo.

That being said there are many companies that do have text in their logo and are incredibly successful, and are not limited by the text either, here are a couple examples:

Coca-Cola Logo  IBM Logo

For these logos the text IS the logo!  And their look has become so popular that if they changed it that would be front page news!  So even though text can be limiting, it can also make for a really unique logo – you just have to be careful of what text you use.

So if you want to avoid going through the hassle of changing your logo, which can cost quite a sum of money (more on that next week!), make sure you get a professional to work on your logo and make sure that your designer is one that not only makes beautiful graphics but graphics that work for marketing your company as well!  Something we at ARK2Productions happily offer to our clients.
